Pseudo Solidus of Odoacer
On August 23, 476 Germanic chieftain Odoacer defeated the last Western Roman Emperor Romulus Augustus, and was proclaimed rex Italiae ("King of Italy"), the first in a thousand years, by his troops. His reign is commonly seen as marking the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the end of Ancient history and the beginning of the Middle Ages. This solidus was minted between 476 and 493 and shows Eastern Roman Emperor Zeno who Odoacern (nominally) served under.
